Pre-1800s

Te Kawerau ā Maki iwi

Henderson sits on land traditionally occupied by Te Kawerau ā Maki, who lived along the Waitākere Ranges and Henderson Creek, relying on the waterways and forests for food and trade.

Thomas Henderson arrives

Scottish settler Thomas Henderson purchased land and established a sawmill along the Henderson Creek, sparking early European settlement in the area and the town of Henderson was born.

Orchards & vineyards

Henderson Square opens

The first major shopping centre in Henderson opened as Henderson Square (later known as Westfield Henderson).

The centre was expanded and relaunched as WestCity Shopping Centre (part of Westfield), establishing itself as a key retail and community hub for West Auckland.

Additions such as Event Cinemas, dining, and fashion strengthened WestCity as a lifestyle and entertainment destination.

Sold by Scentre Group

Ownership passed from Scentre Group (Westfield) to new management, with a focus on evolving into a more community-oriented centre.

WestCity Waitakere

Now known as WestCity Waitakere, the centre continues to serve the diverse West Auckland community with shopping, dining, services, and events, reflecting the area’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant future.

Sustainability Mission

WestCity Waitakere are committed to creating sustainability solutions to reduce our impact on the environment and care for our community and our planet. To date, we have installed a free bottled water refill station for customers, switched to biodegradable cleaning products, installed sensor lights and are installing LED lighting to reduce power consumption. We will continue to develop sustainable practices to improve efficiencies and reduce waste.
